![]() ![]() These are probably the most rewarding sections, and as you tear through these you'll start to unlock some proper, licensed cars from the likes of Audi, VW and others. Meanwhile, the rest of the single player goes some way to making up for French nemesis Mathilda's horrendous accent, with the Blitz races in particular forcing us to think long and hard at times about our path finding. What's more, you only have to complete three missions in each vehicle to unlock the next section, although you have the option of stomaching a fourth, often brutal mission in order to unlock that car throughout the game. Unlike Midnight Club 2, which we spent a lot more time swearing profusely about. It doesn't help that you spend most of the time driving rubbish vehicles either - in a game with as much stopping, starting and handbrake turning as this, surely a knackered taxi, a plodding security van and a slip-slidey limo weren't the best choices? I 'ate you copper, and you smell!įortunately the missions require more or less exactly the right balance of skill, city planning and outright luck, and you'll almost always get them within a few goes. ![]() At first you'll race around Paris, tearing down the Champs-Elysées, roaring through back alleys and even leaping across the Seine, before embarking on a similar run past the White House and along freeways at 220kph.īut unfortunately the missions in Undercover mode, which could be considered the bulk of the single player, are mostly just pick up/drop off variants, punctuated by the occasional race, and set to the indignant whine of half-arsed Allo Allo-inspired voice acting. Good moaningįor a start, it's split into a variety of play modes - the central "Undercover" option is a sort of story mode, which has you performing strings of jobs driving taxis, security vans, limousines, police cars and such, whilst two of our old favourites - Blitz and Checkpoint modes - lurk under the banner of "Single Race" options, along with the obligatory Cruise mode.īecause the game boasts two cities - intricately constructed (and destructible) incarnations of Paris and Washington - it's a bit like having two whole games to play. However since our first date was to be broadband deprived (pity me and my trips to the family home to do PC tech support), we can tell you plenty about the single player game. Indeed, we can't see the various single player challenges taking more than five or six hours to complete, and there's no reward for going back through with feistier vehicles.īut in a way, the single player game is just an appetiser for the superb multiplayer mode, which relegates Midnight Club 2 almost to the bin barely a fortnight after its Xbox debut. It's not as if it does everything particularly well, either, or that it presents more of a challenge than its two most comparable adversaries. You'd think that with Midnight Club 2 and Burnout 2, we'd be fixed for arcade racers by now, but apparently not. Driving around real-life cities is nothing new, and yet here we are in the middle of 2003 clocking up 10-hour sessions on Midtown Madness.

JPEGmini Pro is aimed at professional photographers as well as websites that want to create images that will load as quickly as possible, something that’s increasingly important in an age of cellular communications. On smaller image files the savings are a little lower at a still very useful 30-50%. What does this mean in practice? On larger images it’s possible to reduce the file size by up to 80% or a factor of 5. In other words, JPEGmini analyses each image and then sacrifices unnecessary data points without harming the integrity of the image. JPEGmini does this by creating a single quantization matrix for an entire image so that it’s compliant with the baseline JPEG standard. You can grab the new test images here. This is where JPEGmini comes in: a new piece of software that offers to save image files in the JPEG baseline standard but with a much smaller footprint and no greater loss of image quality than regular JPEG compression. Because Google only allows a max photo size of 16 megapixels and the original test image was 24 MP, I downloaded the RAW format shot and resized it down to 16 MP in Photoshop before starting the test. This time around, I used a studio test image taken by a Nikon D750 DSLR ($ 2000 camera) taken from DPReview. ![]() The original image was just a photo taken on an 2014 Moto X. Next, I redid the comparison with a slightly better image. No pain no gain, I guess, but even so, I think it exhibits remarkably little degradation consider it is nearly a 100% improvement over either Google or JPEGmini’s algorithms alone. The biggest jump in image quality degradation is from applying JPEGmini to an already Google-compressed image. JPEGmini’s compression is good, too, eeking out an extra 40% compression over Google’s while still causing relatively little damage to the original photo. The original, uncompressed image was only very slightly altered by Google’s method, and yet it still was able to nearly cut the filesize in half. What should be immediately clear is that Google’s compression algorithm was the least degrading by a long shot. Of course, the double-compressed image has the most notable degradation of image quality, but even so, it is so minor that, I think, it is still almost certainly unnoticeable in large photographs.įinally, for a more rigorous analysis of the actual differences between each of the four test cases (original, Google, JPEGmini, Google+JPEGmini), I loaded them up in Photoshop and used the difference layer effect to calculate the actual changes in the original image that the compression algorithms performed. Most remarkable of all, though, is that by combining the two–Google and then JPEGmini–it doubled the compression even of the already-compressed image! On the other hand, JPEGmini manages to eek out an extra 40% compression with only trivial image degradation. The reduction in image quality is almost imperceptible, yet it manages to nearly cut the file size in half. In my personal opinion, all four images have the same perceptual image quality. So I a did a little test with a bright image to compare JPEGmini’s compression with Google’s compression. If you analyze the uncompressed and compressed images with a computer, you can see differences - but by eye, they look identical. Like JPEGmini, Google claims to be able to apply lossy compression to images without changing the perceptual quality of the image. The unlimited part comes with a caveat: Google will apply lossy compression to your files. As far as I can tell, its claims are pretty accurate, and it has literally helped me cut the size of some of my picture folders in half.Īs I’m sure most of you are aware, Google just unveiled Google Photos, and with it announced unlimited storage space for photos and videos. Its compression of JPEGs is lossy, but it claims to do so leaving the perceptual image quality virtually unchanged. I’ve been using a program called JPEGmini for a couple years now to compress my JPEG images. In this article I will take a look at Google Photos’ new photo compression performance. ![]() PERRY: I think it'd be very frightening, a sense of being disoriented and thinking, well, how can I be to blame for something that in a sense was not me and yet was me? During the 15th and 16th centuries, clockmaking flourished. Spring-driven clocks appeared during the 15th century. Watches and other timepieces that can be carried on one's person are usually not referred to as clocks. Traditionally, in horology (the study of timekeeping), the term clock was used for a striking clock, while a clock that did not strike the hours audibly was called a timepiece. A major advance occurred with the invention of the verge escapement, which made possible the first mechanical clocks around 1300 in Europe, which kept time with oscillating timekeepers like balance wheels. Water clocks, along with the sundials, are possibly the oldest time-measuring instruments. There is a range of duration timers, a well-known example being the hourglass. Some predecessors to the modern clock may be considered as "clocks" that are based on movement in nature: A sundial shows the time by displaying the position of a shadow on a flat surface. Devices operating on several physical processes have been used over the millennia. The clock is one of the oldest human inventions, meeting the need to measure intervals of time shorter than the natural units such as the day, the lunar month and the year. Based upon refreshTwitchAd.js (see credits) Purpose ![]() Just keep in mind that children have a much easier time learning to sing than adults do. Many people develop their voice over time but others simply start out extremely weak. Of course the answer depends on how well you develop your voice. One common question that comes up when you are trying to figure out how many octaves you can sing is if you are limited to only two notes or can you sing three, four, or five notes. You can however research different songs that the average person will most likely be able to sing along with and play the backing tracks so you can estimate properly. This makes it difficult to estimate how many octaves you can reach. One note might be very loud and the next one could be quite soft. If you look at classical music, you will notice that the notes are not sung at the same rate. There are many things that come into play when trying to figure out how many octaves can the average person sing. However you don’t have to stick with these songs and other simple songs as you can continue to expand as you learn how to sing a lower octave, which is the easiest way to go. Most experts would say that you should aim for about four octaves before you begin to break into your upper range. Of course you will always reach a certain level of octave when you start out. As you know, most songs require that the singer sing from their diaphragm. Now this can get extremely confusing but basically what is happening is the individual is singing through their nose. ![]() There is another person who can sing seven octaves but has to use their voice at the same time. How is this possible? Well the guy was explaining how he goes from a very high voice to a very low voice all in one step. One interesting thing I heard recently is that some people can sing six octaves without using their voices at all. All we need to do is learn how to sing low and high at the same time. However it doesn’t matter because we don’t have to learn how to sing high. This means that you will be a bit competitive if you want to be able to reach those heights. The average person only can reach out their mouth about two octaves. You can change these sounds by changing the length of your breath or by placing your lips in different positions. The “ads” are the higher tones that come before you lower your voice and the vibrations are the higher notes. ![]() You see the human voice consists of “ads” and “vibrations”. If you are reading this article then you are probably wondering to yourself “How many octaves can the average person sing?” Well the good news is, not only can you sing an octave or two but you can sing a dozen or more octaves with no problem at all. |
